Gamble is finishing his second full season in the role for the 49ers.
The New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
Rex Ryan, however, will remain as head coach.
Tannenbaum has run the Jets since 2006.
"Although he helped guide us to two consecutive AFC Championship Games, we are not where we want to be, and a new General Manager will be critical to getting this team back on the right track," Woody Johnson said in the statement.
Mike Tannenbaum will be fired as general manager of the New York Jets, according to a source.
One potential scenario is that Tannenbaum will be reassigned to another role within the organization.
Tannenbaum joined the Jets in 1997.
The following players have been voted to the 2012 Pro Bowl.

Mark Sanchez will start Week 17 for the New York Jets against the Bills.
Greg McElroy is being evaluated for a concussion. McElroy developed headaches while lifting weights on Thursday.
Rex Ryan was unaware McElroy was dealing with any head issues until Thursday morning.
Ryan said Tim Tebow was "obviously not happy" with his latest decision to bypass him in favor of Sanchez.
Tim Tebow told coaches of the New York Jets that he didn't want to be used in any Wildcat packages in Sunday's loss against the Chargers, according to sources.
Tebow was upset about being passed over as starter. The Jets elected to start Greg McElroy.
Jeremy Kerley ran the Wildcat for the first time this season.
Tim Tebow is virtually certain to begin the 2013 season on the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to sources.
Tebow will be traded or released by the New York Jets in the offseason.
The situation for the Jaguars has changed since Tebow was traded by the Broncos to the Jets last offseason.
Jaguars' owner Shad Khan wanted Tebow, but the franchise was still committed to 2011 first round pick Blaine Gabbert.
The Jaguars will have an open competition for the quarterback job heading into 2013.
The Jaguars offered a fourth-round pick to Denver in March and proposed to pay $3 million to the Broncos to compensate for money that had been advanced to Tebow.
The Broncos allowed Tebow to choose between the Jets and Broncos.
The New York Jets will explore a trade of Mark Sanchez and also part ways with Tim Tebow.
Trading Sanchez will prove difficult due to his $8.25 million contract in 2013.
Responding to the trade speculation, Sanchez's agent and older brother, Nick Sanchez, said Wednesday night: "Mark is a Jet and he's going to support the Jets any way he can through the remainder of season."
"I haven't asked for a trade yet," said Tebow.
Norv Turner is expected to have his pick at least five offensive coordinator jobs this offseason.
Turner is unlikely to be retained by the San Diego Chargers.
Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune reports that Turner wouldn't "choose to live/work" for in New York, taking the Jets out of consideration.
Tim Tebow and Camilla Belle have ended their relationship, according to a published report.
A source told Us Weekly, the pair “just didn’t work out.”
Tebow and Belle had been dating quietly since meeting in May.
